Hon. John Briceño
|
Briceño entered electoral politics in 1993 and was elected as the Representative for the Orange Walk Central Division. He subsequently served two terms on the Orange Walk Town Council from 1994 to 2001. His leadership within the PUP quickly gained recognition, and in 1994, he was elected Co-Chairman of the party. By 1996, he became Deputy Party Leader, making history as the youngest Belizean to hold that position. During his tenure as Deputy Party Leader, he played a crucial role in securing national victories for the PUP in 1998 and 2003.
From 1998 to 2008, Briceño served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment. Under his leadership, the ministry underwent modernization, implementing a computerized land management system that streamlined property registration and land title acquisitions for thousands of Belizeans. He also spearheaded the expansion of the Department of Geology, which played a pivotal role in the discovery of commercial oil reserves in Belize.
As Minister of the Environment, he championed regional initiatives for environmental protection, disaster preparedness, and climate change mitigation. His lobbying efforts contributed to the establishment of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System Project and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, inspiring regional efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and to evaluate the sustainable management of the resources of the regions.
In 2020, Briceño led the People's United Party to a historic landslide victory in the General Elections, becoming the fifth Prime Minister of Belize. His term was extended as he led the party to another consecutive win in the 2025 General Elections where his party won 66 percent of the votes cast. He currently holds the portfolios of Minister of Finance, Economic Transformation, Investment, Civil Aviation and E-Governance, overseeing critical policy initiatives aimed at economic revitalization and sustainable development.
Beyond politics, Briceño is a successful entrepreneur. In 1986, he and his brother founded a small fuel business in Orange Walk, which has since expanded into multiple service stations across the country. Their business ventures further extended into telecommunications with the establishment of Centaur Communications Limited, now one of Belize's largest cable and internet providers, as well as a regional radio and television broadcaster.
Briceño pursued his education at Muffles High School in Orang Walk Town and St. John’s Junior College in Belize City before earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985. He has also completed certificate courses at the Harvard School of Government and the University of Texas.
An avid sports enthusiast, Briceño enjoys outdoor activities and formerly played competitive football. He is married to Rossana Briceño, an educator, and together they have three sons. Fluent in both English and Spanish, he continues to dedicate his leadership to the progress and prosperity of Belize.
